Class 5A Rankings (Jan. 21)

#1 Shawnee Mission South (11-0): The Raiders had to be a little disappointed to reach the finals of the Tournament of Champions and play Wichita North, but without star Conner Frankamp, who was sitting out with a concussion. Obviously you hope Frankamp is OK, but the match-up just wasn't the same and SM South easily put away the win for the tournament championship. Another stern test awaits the Raiders this Friday when they host West.

#2 Emporia (10-1): The Spartans travel all the way to Chanute and come away with the tournament title after knocking off a quality Andover Central team in the finals. They picked up another quality win over Leavenworth and have another chance this week with a road trip to Manhattan. Emporia has responded well since its lone loss of the season, ripping off 5 straight wins.

#3 Goddard Eisenhower (11-1): The Tigers are on a roll this season and they picked up a solid tournament title this weekend in Spring Hill. Eisenhower took care of business against two decently solid teams in the first two rounds then picked up its second-best win of the season by knocking off a very good KC Piper team in the finals. Eisenhower should continue to roll this week against Campus.

#4 Lansing (11-1): The Lions take care of business at their tournament, knocking off two over-matched teams on the way to a quality win over Blue Valley Southwest in the finals. Lansing has a bevy of good but not great wins this season and now have an entire week off before its back in action.

#5 Mill Valley (9-2): Since a bit of a rocky start, Mill Valley has been on a roll lately and dominated this past week to win its tournament. The Jaguars were never really challenged and could only pick up a decent win over Coffeyville in the finals, so they did what they expected to do. Olathe Northwest should push them this week, but that's a game the Jaguars should win.

#6 Blue Valley Southwest (8-3): The Timberwolves take care of business to reach the finals of their tournament to get a crack at Lansing, but come up short by 4 points. Not a bad loss by any means, but that was a chance for BV Southwest to pick up a very good win. Now the T-Wolves have the best team in the state in BV Northwest waiting for them, as well with a difficult game against a surging Miege team on Friday.

#7 Kapaun Mount Carmel (8-3): It looked like Kapaun was going to cruise to the El Dorado Invitational championship, but it got down big to an average Gardner-Edgerton team and could not complete a comeback. Kapaun picked up a solid win over Collegiate in the semifinals, but the loss to G-E hurts a little. That's the second loss in less than two weeks to a team the Crusaders probably should have beat. A home date with Heights is a game Kapaun needs to win.

#8 Andover Central (9-3): The Jaguars do what was expected in the first two rounds of the Ralph Miller Classic, but then miss out on a potential huge upset over Emporia in the finals. Central swallows a 14-point loss, which isn't terrible. The Jaguars need a strong response to bounce back this week against Maize.

#9 Bishop Miege (6-5): Haven't paid too close attention to what is going on with Miege this season. But after a 1-5 start, Miege has ripped off five straight wins with several of them being high in quality. Miege picked up three more this week at the Aquinas tournament, beating Washburn Rural in the first round, then SM Northwest in the semifinals and the host, Aquinas, in the finals. If they can keep the tidal wave of momentum going this week by beating BV Southwest, then they're going to keep shooting up the rankings.

#10 Andover (9-3): The Trojans were shunned from the earlier rankings because they didn't have a signature win. That changed this past week as they rolled to the tournament title in Salina and beat the home team, Salina Central, in the finals. The Trojans can legitimize themselves by knocking off Central again this week at home for the second time in a week.
