Class 5A Rankings (Jan. 28)

#1 Shawnee Mission South (12-0): The beat goes on for the Raiders, as they easily put away a very good SM West team by 21 points last week. That's an impressive win, but if they can knock off Olathe South on the road on Friday then the Raiders will have their best win of the season.

#2 Emporia (11-1): Emporia is on a nice roll now, as it continued last week with a solid 13-point win over Manhattan on the road. The Spartans have been impressive this season with the exception of their one shocking loss, and they will have their shot at making a bid for the top team in 5A if SM South slips up and they are able to handle Topeka Highland Park, the No. 1 team in 4A, on Friday.

#3 Goddard Eisenhower (12-1): The Tigers are in the same position as Emporia and Lansing in catching SM South. None of the three have an outstanding win on the season and all three have limited quality victories. But Eisenhower can't control that, and it keeps plugging away - blasting Campus last week on the road. Eisenhower gets another poor record this Friday at home in Ark City.

#4 Lansing (11-1): Nothing happened last week for Lansing and there's not much to get excited about this week. Tonganoxie at home on Tuesday could prove to be challenging, but the Lions have proven this season they're capable of handling teams like that. Turner on Friday should be another easy win, as well.

#5 Mill Valley (10-2): The Jaguars' two losses this season have been to elite teams. I bet they are dying to get another shot at Lansing, but they'll have to wait. Instead, Mill Valley took care of business with a nice road win at Olathe Northwest last week. Mill Valley has a challenging schedule this week, as it hosts KC Piper, the No. 4 team in 4A, and a solid Tonganoxie team on Friday.

#6 Kapaun Mount Carmel (9-3): The Crusaders responded to their disappointing loss in the finals of their mid-season tournament by absolutely crushing Wichita Heights, a team that entered with some serious momentum. That might be the most impressive win of the season for Kapaun, which should have a stern test with a road trip to Wichita East on Tuesday. Win that and the Crusaders will be in the mix to move up.

#7 Andover Central (10-3): Nothing special from the Jaguars this season. They've played along the lines of beating the teams they should beat and losing to teams that are probably a little better. They took care of Maize by 17 points last week and should do the same to Goddard on Tuesday before a nice crosstown rivalry game against Andover on Friday.

#8 Bishop Miege (7-5): I don't what the story behind Miege's 2-5 start to the season was, but I do know that it is on an absolute tear right now. Miege has played arguably the most difficult schedule of anyone in 5A and has come away with only 5 losses. That's actually not too bad. The road win over Blue Valley Southwest was another quality victory, and Miege will have a chance for two more against BV North and BV West this week.

#9 Andover (10-3): Don't look now but the Trojans are on a nice little winning streak since a rocky start to the season. Andover has some serious momentum after pounding Salina Central for the second time in less than a week. They're hoping that carries over to Friday's showdown against Andover Central. Andover has played second fiddle for so long in that town during basketball season and this is its chance to prove themselves.

#10 Blue Valley Southwest (8-5): After such a nice start to the season, the T-Wolves are on a bit of a slide now. They've lost three of their last five, although they don't have a bad loss on the season. Last week was rough, losing to BV Northwest and then Miege, and Southwest has no time to regroup as it has two challenging road trips this week - at Aquinas on Tuesday and then at Gardner-Edgerton on Friday.
