Class 6A Rankings (Jan. 28)

#1. Blue Valley Northwest (12-0): Until someone can get within single-digits of the Huskies, they are without question the best team in Kansas. Northwest easily put away a good BV Southwest team, a good BV North team and a good BV West team all in one week - without anyone getting under 10 points of them. Two more good games are on tap this week against Blue Valley on Tuesday and then Aquinas on Friday.

#2 Shawnee Mission East (11-1): What do the Lancers do in response to their first loss of the season? All they do is go on the road to one of Missouri's best teams and knock off Rockhurst. That's East's second elite win of the season, which keeps them in the chase for the No. 1 ranking. If they can get past a tricky road game at O. Northwest on Tuesday, it will set up a showdown at Lawrence, the No. 4 team in 6A, on Friday.

#3 Wichita North (10-2): It's difficult to rank this team without Conner Frankamp, who has missed the last two games - both North losses. The good news is that Frankamp is back playing tonight, as North should take care of Wichita Northwest. A win at Wichita Heights on Friday would be nice, as well, but Frankamp will have to wait another week to pick up another quality win.

#4 Lawrence (8-4): It's time to prove how good Lawrence really is. After taking last week off, the Lions will host Leavenworth at home on Tuesday, which would be a solid win, and then take on SM East at home on Friday in what would be a huge win for Lawrence.

#5 Olathe South (9-3): South ended its skid last week by knocking off an overmatched KC Central team by 39 points. That will be the case once again on Tuesday against SM North, but South gets a chance for an elite win when it hosts 5A's No. 1 team, SM South, on Friday.

#6 Olathe East (9-3): The Hawks ended their losing skid with a quality win on the road at Washington last week by a 13-point margin. This week brings two more solid challenges - a road trip to SM Northwest on Tuesday and then a home game against SM West, the No. 9 team in 6A, on Friday.

#7 Derby (10-3): After losing its best player, Taylor Schieber, to injury and going through a little bit of an identity crisis (losing all 3 games during that span), Derby is back on track after a monstrous 49-point win over Ark City last week. They might match that this Friday at Campus, but that won't help very much with their rating.

#8 Blue Valley North (6-6): You might look at North's 6-6 record on the season and scoff, but North has played one of, if not the toughest schedule in the state of Kansas so far. I'll give them credit for that, even though they got trounced last week at BV Northwest. There's no break either, as North will have two very tough road trips this week - at Miege, a ranked 5A team, on Tuesday, and then at Blue Valley on Friday.

#9 Shawnee Mission West (7-5): The loss to SM South was a little disappointing, but the Vikings still have put together a very quality season to this point. They have a tricky road test at Free State to get through on Tuesday before a huge tilt against Olathe East on the road on Friday.

#10 Gardner-Edgerton (7-5): It was a tough go at the beginning of the season for Gardner, which started out 2-5. But a 5-game winning streak has put them back on the scene with some very nice wins this season. They took care of business against Blue Valley last week, and have two more winnable games but they will be challenges: on the road at BV West on Tuesday and then against BV Southwest on Friday.
