Class 5A Rankings

#1 SM South (8-0): Not much to talk about last week, as the Raiders continue to dominate people. They're winning by an average of 25.4 points this season, but that will be put to the test this week if they make the finals of the Tournament of Champions in Dodge City against a team like Wichita North or Scott City.

#2 Emporia (7-1): The Spartans recovered from their shocking loss the week before by responding with two big wins last week over the Topeka schools. That wasn't much of a test for Emporia and it should cruise to the Chanute tournament championship and could get a quality match-up with Andover Central.

#3 Eisenhower (8-1): Two more wins for the Tigers, but it was a little concerning it took a last-minute rally to beat Maize South on the road. But a win is a win and Eisenhower is probably the favorite entering the Spring Hill tournament this week. A sweep there could legitimize the Tigers outside the Wichita area.

#4 Lansing (8-1): The Lions faced one of their only tests of the regular season and lost to KC Piper on the road by 7. It would have been a nice win and a marquee one, but Lansing responded well by beating a good Basehor team by 17. They could get redemption this week at the Tonganoxie Invitational with a win over BV Southwest in a potential title game showdown.

#5 Blue Valley Southwest (6-2): A perfect 6-0 start came to a crashing halt last week, as Southwest dropped consecutive games to BV North by 6 and Blue Valley by 6. That was a big week for the T-Wolves to prove themselves as one of the better teams in the state and it came up empty. One more chance for a marquee win could be had this week at the Tonganoxie Invitational against Lansing possibly.

#6 Kapaun Mount Carmel (6-2): The Crusaders appeared to be on a roll after the break, but then a 2-point head-scratching loss at Northwest happened. That raises new questions about this team, but winning the El Dorado Invitational this week would go a long way in healing those wounds.

#7 Andover Central (7-2): It was a big week for the Jaguars after a disappointing loss to Kapaun. Central responded by going on the road and handing Derby its first loss of the season in overtime by 3 points. That could be a big momentum-builder, but just how much will be seen this week if Central can reach the finals of the Chanute tournament and play a competitive game against Emporia.

#8 Mill Valley (6-2): The Jaguars were road warriors last week, picking up solid wins over Basehor and Bonner Springs last week. It's been a solid start to the season for Mill Valley and it can add to that with a solid performance in the Coffeyville tournament this week.

#9 KC Washington (5-2): It remains to be seen just how good of a win that 19-point thrashing of Schlagle on the road was last week for the Wildcats. They have a case to be ranked higher, and it can prove it this week with a few wins in a loaded Topeka tournament.

#10 Leavenworth (5-3): A huge 4-point upset over Olathe South vaults Leavenworth into the rankings after a 3-3 start to the season. They're playing well right now but they'll have to keep it up this week at the Chanute tournament with a potential schedule of Chanute, Emporia and Andover Central.
